You will be working on a variety of tasks depending on what needs to be done at the time. When not working, you will have plenty of time to discover the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.
The center is located near the town of Aguada, about a 20 minute drive from Rincon.
Tasks:
Tasks can include but are not limited to:
- Plastering and building out the new Earthship kitchen.
- Restoring carpentry projects (doors and windows).
- Cleaning roofs and gutters of existing Earthship domes.
- Painting and reapplying sealant.
Please be prepared to take initiative as your host, Carlos, will guide you but will not be able to be with you at all times as he has his own business.
Off time:
Beaches, waterfalls, excursions. The area where you will be in Puerto Rico has so much to offer. Carlos, your host, will have some great suggestions.
About the Puerto Rico Relief and Community Center:
In September 2017, Hurricane Maria caused catastrophic damage and a major humanitarian crisis on the island of Puerto Rico. Since then, Biotecture Planet Earth has been finding ways of supporting a demonstration project of a sustainable and hurricane resistant Earthship in Puerto Rico, with no government or corporate support.
The finished building is a community center led by the local non-profit organization Tainasoy Apiario and features various rooms for events and for visitors to experience the Earthship. In times of disaster, the center is used as a "first relief center" and as a base for disaster relief operations, providing solar power, water, shelter and other basic necessities.
Accommodation:
There are several options for you in terms of accommodation:
- You can find your own accommodation. There are plenty of airbnbs in the area of Rincon and Aguada.
- You can stay in one of the Earthship domes during your field study. There are two that are set up with a queen bed in each. The price is $40 per night for one person and $60 for two (sharing a bed).
- You can camp on site. This option is free of charge, but you will have to be completely self-sufficient and bring all your own WATERPROOF equipment as it rains frequently.
Food:
Please plan on being completely self sufficient in terms of food. If you choose to camp or stay in the Earthship, you will be able to use the kitchen in Carlos’ house which is on the premises. Sharing food among everybody is recommended and a big part of Puerto-Rican culture.
Travel and transport:
You will have to organize your own travel and transportation to site. We recommend flying into San Juan or Aguada. Renting a car for the duration of your stay is critical to be able to get supplies and explore the island.
Timing:
Field studies can be organized at any time between November and March, as long as it is approved by the host. Duration for field study credit is three weeks.
Price:
The price is $600 for volunteers who have completed the Earthship Academy program, $900 for non-academy students. The fee you pay will go to materials and production of the field study.
